How to Get Permission to Republish a Comment Article

Learn how to request permission to reprint or share Comment content, and what conditions apply once approval is granted.

Cardus, the publisher of Comment, retains copyright to all original work published across all Cardus publications, in perpetuity and in all media. Before reproducing any Comment content—in whole or in part—you must receive written permission from a Comment representative. Requests submitted without prior approval do not constitute permission to proceed.

To request permission, contact us at team@comment.org.

Excerpts and Fair Use

We encourage sharing short excerpts from Comment pieces in accordance with Fair Use guidelines. As a general rule, brief quotations used for commentary, criticism, or educational purposes are acceptable without advance permission. For guidance on what constitutes fair use, see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fair_use#Amount_and_substantiality

Full-Text Republication

Full-text republication of any Comment material—whether in print or online—is not permitted within ninety (90) days of the original publication date. After that window, full-text republication still requires prior written approval from Comment.

Designed Documents (PDFs and Print Scans)

Under no circumstances may designed Comment documents—including PDFs or scans of physical journal issues — be posted online, regardless of the publication date or the requester's relationship to Comment or Cardus.

Required Credit Line

All approved reprints must include the following credit line at the top of each republished article:

This article originally appeared on [DATE] in Comment, a publication of Cardus.

The words "Comment" and "Cardus" must be hyperlinked as shown above in all online republications.

Furnishing Copies to Comment

Once a reprint is published, you are required to provide Comment with:

  • A copy of the print reprint, or
  • A link to the online republication

Please send these to team@comment.org.
